Who has used one and found it useful? Any recommendations would be welcome.

I looked at a bassinet, and ended up, of all things, with a rocking cradle.

I was interest in a bassinet only for the smaller size, since I couldn't fit a cot in our room, and didn't want to put Lucien to sleep in another room.

I got a rocking cradle because it had a really good air flow, and could be used to rock him to sleep.

My sister didn't use cradle or bassinet at all - she used the cot at the higher setting (most have two settings now), but her cot fit into her room.

I fell in love with the retro feel of the rocking cradle. Lucien seem to like it too!

Bassinets are only used for a short time and the baby really doesn't NEED to be in anything other than a cot straight up - however...
A cot is large and difficult to fit into your bedroom whereas a bassinet is small, easy to access, saves getting up and down at night and having to move around from room to room in those first months that baby comes home. It is mobile and usually comes now as a complete pack that needs nothing more than a set of sheets. The purchase is for the convenience of the mother rather than the need of the child.

Yes, they are an advantage in that they can be moved from room to room. A lady I know even used hers outside during nice weather under cover with a mosquito net over it. It enabled her to enjoy gardening and listen out for her daughter at the same time.
