Design and Features
The BabyBjorn Synergy baby carrier is a standard looking baby carrier and comes in Black, Marine Blue and Crystal White.
Where it differs from other carriers is the 3D mesh material that it’s made from. You can actually see and feel the air flow through what is quite thick padding. It has a softer mesh material around your baby’s face and head.
It features wide shoulder straps and a back panel to help evenly distribute your baby’s weight across your shoulders and back and comes in three different types, organic cotton, airy mesh and soft cotton mix. Our review is based on the organic cotton.
It is suitable for use for babies from 3.5 kgs to 15 kgs and requires not inserts or additional support.
Performance and Drawbacks
This carrier is very comfortable for your baby and is designed to support their head, neck, back and hips. It seats them in a position that is ergonomically correct for a developing skeleton. As an infant your baby can be worn facing inward with the front of the carrier supporting their head. As they grow older you can fold this support down so your baby can face outwards and enjoy observing their environment.
The BabyBjorn Synergy is also very comfy for parents. I’m 5”6 and the back piece fits perfectly between my shoulder blades; however, the back piece is not adjustable and may not sit as well if you are a taller parent. Parents report that they get some longer baby wear using the Synergy rather than the BabyBjorn Original Carrier, however, your shoulders and back do get sore after some time. One thing that is great about BabyBjorn carriers is that most retailers have BabyBjorn samples available to try before you buy so you can check the fit.
You can see the how the air circulates through the Synergy carrier to keep both you and your baby cool in summer. The carrier itself is very light and is physically softer and floppier that the BabyBjorn Original. This makes it ideal for hot summer conditions but not so great for cooler, winter weather.
Like all BabyBjorn carriers it is well made of quality materials and will last forever. It is machine washable (which is makes white a viable option) and dries very quickly.
The Synergy has won numerous design awards including a recent Australian International Design Award.
Conclusion
Although expensive, the Synergy is a smartly designed baby carrier which is very easy to use. It is particularly well suited if you live in a hot climate.
Also, because they are sturdy and a parent favourite, they retain a good resale value or can be handed down from baby to baby.
If your upper body strength is lacking you might prefer a carrier with a waist strap/support like the Ergo carrier.
