Design and Features
The Bump Buddy is a small plastic covered cold pack. They come in many designs including some of your child’s favorite friends from Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine, Playschool and some generic butterfly, football, star and dinosaur ones.
They contain a non-toxic and non-caustic gel and are registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
Performance and Drawbacks
You keep your Bump Buddy in the fridge, not the freezer, so it’s just the right temperature against your child’s skin when a tumble occurs. They provide natural relief from bumps, bruises, minor burns and insect bites.
The Bump Buddy is a nice size to fit into a little toddler hand so they can administer relief themselves while the friendly faces and designs provide comfort and a distraction.
Kids love the fun designs, however, KidsColdPacks stress that they should not be given to children to play with as they may split. The gel inside is non-toxic but a broken one may make a mess.
Having said that the plastic is pretty thick and the seam strong so it would take some force to break it.
Bump Buddies are reusable so it’s best to keep one in the fridge, apply when necessary and wash and return it to the fridge when finished with.
One of the things I like about Bump Buddies is that you can choose between your Sesame Street/Thomas themes, an Aussie Play School theme or generic/non commercial designs.
So we had a couple of Bump Buddies loitering in a few of our toddler tester fridges waiting for a mishap and when one did occur the Bump Buddy performed it's duty well. It was easy to apply and nice and soft so didn't add insult to injury. It was cool but not too cold so our little toddler tester was OK to have it applied even though he was quite distressed at the time.
The injury resulted in quite a lot of blood so one Bump Buddy wasn't enough, an ice pack was also made up but was clearly not as friendly as the Bump Buddy and it was rejected. In the end the ice pack proved useless and the Bump Buddy an outright winner.
Conclusion
It's inevitable that your child will have some trips and spills, probably up until they are 15 or so! Bump Buddies are an effective toddler friendly option to have ready. They are also durable and reasonably priced.
Bump Buddy’s are available directly from KidsColdPacks online or from your local chemist.
