Design and Features
The KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed is a smaller sized bed designed to accommodate a cot mattress. It's made from MDF with a natural, beech looking, finish.
It features toddler rails on each side and nice little shelf at the end of the bed for seating or storage. It's also low to the ground for easy access.
Performance and Drawbacks
The KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed requires assembly. We always like to assemble the products we review ourselves on the 'if we can do it, anyone can' principle. 90% of the assembly was easy to do but we did have to call upon someone with more upper body strength (i.e. a Best Buys dad) to tighten the four bolts that join each half.
Our little toddler tester took to the KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed straight away. We did prepare him for the move so he knew it was coming and was excited. Initially the most beneficial feature of the KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed was the low height from the floor making it easy for our little tester to get in and out.
The bed rails are reasonably effective, they certainly stop toddlers rolling straight off the bed. However our squiggly toddler tester is often found asleep half in and out of the bottom of his bed. He seems to slide down the bed and out the bottom. The good news is that during the night he just resettles himself back into bed.
After a couple of months the finish of the Kidkraft modern toddler bed is holding up. Obviously it's getting a lot of toddler action. The only point worth mentioning is that the bolts holding the 2 halves of the bed together tend to loosen up. It doesn't affect the performance of the bed, you only notice it when you are moving the bed around.
Finally, the sheets are easy to change on the KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed. We put a standard sized cot mattress on ours and it's easy just to lift up the mattress and pop the fitted sheet off and on. One of the advantages of a toddler bed is that you can continue to use your nice cot sheet sets & blankets.
Conclusion
There is a small range of reasonably priced toddler beds on the market, mainly from IKEA. What distinguishes the KidKraft Modern Toddler Bed is its great modern looks. It's kid friendly & functional without being cutesie.
