Design

The KinderKot Travel Bed and cot design is based on the pop up tent concept consisting of a wire frame with a polyester cover. It is very lightweight to make it ultra portable.

Features

It features a large zip opening on the side and includes a self inflating mattress which fits into a pocket in the base of the cot.

The sides of the cot roll up to expose windows of netting to allow for ventilation while keeping the sun and the bugs out.

Performance

The Kinderkot pops up easily and provides a large sleeping space for a child. The mattress is thick and comfy and its location reduces the possibility of a child getting caught between the mattress and the base, however, you cannot use a sheet in it. It does come with a soft sleeping bag which is great for older children but is a SIDS risk for infants and is not recommended for babies under 18 months old.

It’s cover is durable and suitable for outdoor activities, however, in certain weather conditions it should be pegged into the ground.

Drawbacks

Unlike other travel cots on the market the KinderKot cannot be used as a playpen because your baby can’t stand up and move about in it. In general I would be reluctant to put a toddler in it as vigorous movement could topple it.

The cot can be difficult to fold if you don’t know ‘the knack’. Folding it incorrectly can result in the frame bending out of shape or breaking. The Australian KinderKot website has several useful instructional videos featuring a very European looking chap demonstrating the correct fold.

If your child does not like to be in an enclosed space then this is not the cot for you.

Conclusion

The Kinderkot has been designed as a one size fits all (babies from newborn to 4 years) travel cot solution. In doing so it compromises function for babies and children in different age groups. It's probably most useful if you regularly need an enclosed environment for your baby or child to take naps in. For bush walking, a day in the park or other outdoor activities it would be great.

You should always be aware of the SIDS risks when your baby is using a new style of cot. Find more information on the SIDS and Kids website.
