Design and Features
Kushies Ultra-Lite reusable nappies come in the modern cloth nappy design, i.e. are similar in shape and design to disposable nappies. They are an AIO nappy which means all in one.
The Kushie Ultra-Lite is made from layers of soft flannel with an additional soaker layer and a lightweight waterproof cover on the outside. They are fastened with adjustable velcro straps.
A good place to start with the Kushies is their trial pack which includes everything you need to start including 2 nappies, liners, boosters (which is an extra wetting pad you can add for night sleeps) and 2 reusable wipes. They also come in packs of 5 mixed designs.
Two sizes are available, 4-10kg and 10-20kg and they come in bright modern unisex prints.
Performance and Drawbacks
Kushies Ultra-Lites have gathered sides and a waterproof cover to keep 'everything' in. There are 6 layers of soft flannel for absorbency and an additional flip out absorbent soaker. You can choose either a reusable or disposable nappy liner.
When they're on a bottom, Kushies Ultra-Lites are marginally bulkier than a disposable, but pretty consistent compared to other lighter reusable nappies on the market. They will comfortably fit under your baby's clothing. One thing I like about Kushies is that they only come in 2 sizes so you only have to pay for 2 lots of nappies rather than 3 or 4.
The flip out absorbent soaker is a smart feature which allows for quicker drying. Having 6 layers of flannel means that the Kushies do take a while to dry on the line, however, even with the waterproof cover you can pop your Kushies in the dryer. I'm told popping a dry towel in with them will speed up the process.
One thing I've noticed about the Ultra-Lites is that the cloth liners are loose in the nappy. The last thing you want is a poopy nappy liner on the loose. On the other hand I really like the flushable disposable nappy liners, the toilet is the hygenic way to be disposing of nappy contents, irrespective of whether you use reusable or disposable nappies.
Kushies are great quality and should outlast a few occupants. The modern patterns are pretty nice and perfectly presentable on their own, it's nice they don't need to be covered by an extra waterproof cover.
When it comes to performance the proof is in the pudding (so to speak). We've sent our Kushies Ultra-Lites off to a pair of new parents to report back on their use over the longer term.
Conclusion
Kushies Ultra-Lites are great quality and smartly designed. I like the waterproof outer cover, the designs are pretty funky too.
If your local baby shop doesn't stock Kushies you'll find them at Fertile Mind and there are many other online stockists.
