The Respisense breathing monitor is the latest gadget designed to minimise the risk of SIDS.
Design and Features
About the size of a matchbox the Resispsense breathing monitor clips onto the front of your baby's nappy. It has several lights on the front which flash in rhythm with your baby's breathing. If your baby's breathing rhythm slows or stops for longer than 15 seconds the Respisense gently vibrates to stimulate your baby's breathing. If breathing does not resume an alarm sounds alerting parents.
Performance and Drawbacks
The Respisense takes its job seriously and it is reassuring that you can see it working. When turned on the monitor automatically checks the battery and will alert you if it is running low and needs replacement. The battery should last for approximately 12 months and needs to be returned to the supplier for replacement.
The monitor is small and can be used anywhere but once your baby is moving about (approx 6 months) the alarm can come off the nappy and will sound. The alarm is low enough not to frighten your baby but loud enough to alert you.
Be cautious, this product is designed to assist reduce the risk of SIDS. It does not replace parental care and SIDS guidelines should always be followed.
Conclusion
The Respisense is a versatile and sensible approach to breathing monitors.
As with any product designed to reduce the risk of SIDS it should be used in conjunction with SIDS guidelines and with care. Find more information on the SIDS and Kids website and support Red Nose Day every year.
The Respisense can also be leased from the Australian distributer.
