Design and Features

The Silikids Glass Tumbler is a 6oz glass covered in a silicone cover.

The silicone cover has a raised pattern to aid grip and holes so you can see how much liquid is left in the glass.

They come in lime and purple in Australia, you can get an aqua version in the US.

Performance and Drawbacks

A silicone sleeve is a smart way to make a glass tumbler suitable for use by toddlers. Not only is the glass/skin combination dishwasher safe, hypoallergenic and bacteria free the skin allows for easy grip and protects the glass (mostly) from breaking.

The 6oz size is just right for both little hands and little tummies and toddlers really like to drink out of these tumblers. The silicone cover slips off easily but is a little more fiddly to put back on (but not too much).

Silikids tumblers can go straight in the dishwasher with or without the silicone skin and they don't deteriorate or discolor like plastic cups do. When you wash it you can expect water residue to be left inside the skin, if this bothers you take the skin off before you wash and put it back on after the glass is dry.

We test drove these glasses with four of toddlers over a six month period to see how long they lasted with the tantrum throwing set. Of the four one broke when it fell on its lip onto tiles, the other three have survived despite numerous accidents including a double whammy bouncer off a tiled wall and floor.

When the tester glass did break it was held together by the skin so it didn't become a hazard for our tester toddler who was feeling quite emotional about the whole incident as the tumbler had become a favourite.

Conclusion

Usually I wouldn't consider a glass suitable for youngsters but I've got to say I really like the Silikid tumblers, they are tactile and just right for young diners. My only complaint is the price it's a little steep when you consider you can buy a pack of 6 glasses for under $10.00.

When I originally wrote this review I concluded by saying that in 12 months I might be eating my words regarding the value for money aspect; at 6 months its silikids tumblers broken - 1 (amongst 4 toddlers), other glasses broken - 8 (between 2 adults).
