The Runabout was one of the first genuine off-roaders to come onto the pram scene and Valco have been continually updating and improving it since.
Design
The Runabout is a big practical pram for a big practical job. The colours are pretty solid blacks, greys and browns but you can occasionally get a special edition that lightens things up a bit.
As you would expect the construction is solid and Valco make a point of noting its rust resistant qualities. The components are well designed and made from quality materials.
Features
The pram has many features including a tilt adjustable handle, unlimited recline positions including flat and a newborn head hugger.
The seat is well padded and has a fully removable and washable cover. The size of the hood is generous as is the size of the under seat basket which can also be accessed through a back zip. In addition to the under seat basket the pram also has a saddle bag on the side of the basket and a reasonable sized bag which is zipped on the back seat.
The hood has a peek a boo window so you can take a sneaky peak and the pram has a ventilation system that can be added to by removing the bag on the back of the seat.
I like the way the insect net and rain cover zip into the hood and that there are a lot of accessories available for this pram for a reasonable price making it quite versatile.
Performance
As you would expect the manoeuvrability on this pram is great. It has a unique front wheel system that allows it to be switched to three different 'modes' so that you can adjust the pram 'mode' to suit the environment. It also has super suspension for a smooth ride for your baby. This pram can be pushed one handed when needed.
It has a wide back wheel base making it difficult to get through small spaces, doors and shop isles. The recline action is a zip system which can be fiddly; the special editions often have an improved recline action.
This is a large pram so it is reasonable that it would have a large fold size so make sure it will fit into your car boot before you purchase it. The fold action requires two hands and is pretty straight forward.
The breaks are a simple flip down bar across the rear wheel base and are pretty sturdy.
Drawbacks
Despite the pram being large and obviously hefty parents still complain about the difficulty getting it in and out of their car boots. If you are an urban dweller and really aren’t going to use it out of doors, forget this one.
The Runabout comes with a toddler seat option. Avoid this. There are so many parent complaints that the pram becomes unstable when used for two children its not worth the risk. When you buy this pram know that you will use it for one child only.
The air filled tires puncture so make sure you always carry your repair kit with you.
Conclusion
For those of you who really have an outdoorsy lifestyle, the Runabout is a great option for you. Those of you who only wish they had an outdoorsy lifestyle shop around for something that might better suit your needs.
For a toddler and a baby combo consider the Twin Runabout or one of the phil&teds in-line prams.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, you can jog with it.
